Calendar Girls 2016

I haven’t been posting in awhile so it is time to catch up!  It has been a very busy winter. I had a knee replacement October 26th. I am happy to say it feels great and I am thrilled to be out of pain.  I have been busy making sketches and preparing for summer open studios (if you can imagine that).

I hope you enjoy seeing these pieces. If you are interested in any of these,  you should know that they are all framed and available for sale. You can email me at susanmedyn(at)cox.net.

Rebirth of Venus

cat painting

Titles tell us so much.  I first was going to call this “It Would Make A Cat Laugh”.

Then I thought about how beautiful the planets were in conjunction last night and wanted to call this painting “Waiting for the Stars”.

But Venus with her earrings reminded me of Willie Marlowe‘s series Peggy Guggenheim’s Earrings so in a round about way (since my lovely Venus is wearing earrings and maybe is as promiscuous as the wonderful Ms. Guggenheim) I thought, “One can’t be born with earrings, but one can make a reappearance, thus my title.

While you are here take a look at Willie’s website. Her works are influenced by Persian and Indian miniature paintings. Her use of color and reference to ancient art awes and inspires me. I feel so fortunate to have acquired one of her paintings in the series of Peggy Guggenheim’s Earrings. It hangs appropriately in our bedroom.

I love making my creatures appear and disappear. How many can you find?

This is an 8″ by 10” ink and watercolor on Aqua Board. I have been working and reworking this for the past two weeks. These paintings are slow going.

Rebirth of Venus is SOLD.

He’s All That, 20 of 30 paintings in 30 days.

He's All That. copyJust a quickie as I have had to work all day. Lighting was not great for photographing. Wish I could have watched the inauguration.

But maybe a poppy painting tomorrow.

SHE’S ON TOP! DAY 15 OF 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS.

SWIRLY SKIES

I almost dumped this painting. I drew it one day in pencil, inked it another and painted it for 10 hours ( yup 10 hours) today. And I was not happy with the background. It was too dark. So I changed the color of it and painted the background gold.

It did not look right. My husband, knowing my frustration suggested I run it under the sprayer in the kitchen sink to see what would happen.

Well, my painting appeared!

I was so surprised. The gold was made from  mica chips and titanium white paint and it all washed away. So here is my very 20 hour day 15 painting.Of course it is another of my jungle type Rousseau paintings Medyn style. It is named for the little lady sitting on top of the world and enjoying herself.

This is an 8″ by 10″ Ink and Watercolor on Aqua Board. It is framed in a wood shadow box frame that is painted black. It is for sale for $450.00.

To purchase you can click the buy now button or contact me at susanmedyn(at)cox.net

SCAPES, 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS, DAY 7 AND LOVING IT.

city scape

I am working a lot of hours today so did a play with colors to make a cityscape. I love looking out from the upper story of my mother-in-law’s Manhattan apartment and seeing the view. This painting is 5″ by 7″ and is on aqua board. It is varnished so needs no glass for hanging. To see some of the work of the over 200 painters who have taken on Leslie Saeta’s challenge just click on her name and you can take a look at all the wonderful paintings.

30 Paintings in 30 Days, Day 2, and Wiggly Squiggly Sperm!

SPERMMy work is so detailed that this is quite a challenge to make 30 paintings in 30 days, especially since I need to complete new work for several shows and open studios coming up this Spring and Summer.

So today I played with paint. Even though my work is playful, it is so unlike me to go at something free form. This is a 5 by 7 watercolor on aqua board that is varnished. Love those luminescent paints!

My tools usually are my #3 pencil,  Crow Quill pen, India Ink, and an eraser, even before I get to any painting. So hopefully tomorrow I will have finished another creature feature. They take the better part of a day to complete.

I certainly thank Kelley McDonald and Leslie Saeta for inspiring me to challenge myself. Sometimes it is the offhand comment that sparks a dream in one’s mind which propels us forward.

Pard On Me

Pard On Me

Those of you who know the book, The Medieval Bestiary will recognize the Pard. Pards were feline animals with spotted coats that were known to be extremely fast, considered as fast as cheetahs. Pards would mate with Lions and have offspring that were Leopards. This is another one of my newer Henri Rousseau influenced paintings. I am working on 2 more at the moment.

This painting is done in ink and watercolor on Aqua Board and is 5″ by 7″. It is framed in a black shadow box frame and is for sale for $250. To purchase click the PayPal link below.

It will be on display at The Art Stable Gallery Westport starting Saturday unless it finds a home sooner.

Here is hoping  you can come and meet the artists at our Holiday Open House on Sunday November 18th, 2012 from 2-5PM. It should be a lovely afternoon to browse the gallery and have a glass or two of cheer.

Bare Bear, Partridge In Therapy and Dophins on the Sakonnet!

PARTRIDGE IN THERAPY!

This gilded partridge was inspired by a magazine cover. My partridge  looks as though he might have a hard time flying. I think this 8″ by 8″ Ink and Watercolor on Aqua board is a cool bird. Paypal link above watercolor painting.

Bare Bear was inspired by a bronze bear on the grounds of the magnificent  Grove Park Inn  http://www.groveparkinn.com/in Asheville, North Carolina. Bare Bear is also on aqua board. He is headed for a new home. I am continuing to make whimsical watercolors on aqua board as well as  watercolor paper.  Will soon be posting my  latest work  which is a series of Holiday and Solstice Cards.

On a very wonderful note, yesterday I received an email from  friends who were boating on the Sakonnet River and had 2 dolphins join them for their cocktail hour. I feel so fortunate to spend so much time in such a beautiful area. I will also be at the Art Stable Gallery http://www.artstablegallery.com/ today from noon until 4:00PM. Please come by and visit. I always love to see everyone.

2 Self Taught Artists from Europe and Holiday Cards

A work by Chantal Sellan

I found the work of French artist Chantal Sellan while browsing the web. She worked as a psychologist for many years. She was born in 1936  and started painting in 1980. Her works are in many public  and private collections.

Another self taught artist I found is from Denmark. Inge Selmer was born the same year I was (and I am not telling when that was)….but I love this Henri Rousseau like painting. She spent many years working in reflexology before starting her art career in 1983.  She has exhibited since 2004.

I have been working on some small paintings on aqua board of curious creatures and continue to work on my ink and watercolors of garden parties held by imaginary animals.

I am also making a series of Holiday Cards that I plan to have printed.

I like the simplicity of this one. It is on white watercolor paper but taking photo’s in the afternoon does not always get good results, especially when there is a cat jumping on the table repeatedly.

Tough Bird

My friend Kathrine Lovell lent me a book on various chickens and I liked the pose of this one. I love  the look on his face. He seems to be saying “Don’t mess with me”. I have the feeling I have raised a chicken like this before. He wouldn’t go in his house, he strutted across the road in Arlington, MA, he slept on the top of a chair on our porch and he led the rest of the birds down the road to meet Alex as he got off the school bus every day.

Chickens though aren’t destined for long lives and one day a mama fox snatched him away.

This guy is painted on  2″ deep cradled aqua board and is 6″ by 6″ and for sale for $150 plus $10.00 shipping. If you are interested please contact me at susanmedyn@cox.net.

I am busy making these chicks for upcoming South Coast Artist Open Studios August 18th and 19th. It is a great weekend to come on down and tour the many artists studios in this lovely coastal area. www.southcoastartists.org for more information.
