The Great Hurricane of ’38, art and beekeeping.

It’s that time of year again and Hurricane Flo has sent us rains and a beautiful sunset. The beehives are battened down and the bees are kicking the drones out.

What an adventure. We started with three hives in the mid-April and we now have seven. I will be attending an apiatherapy conference in late October as I am interested in the medicinal properties of bee byproducts especially propolis. I will post more on the American Apiatherapy Conference later this Fall.

I have been busy painting all summer.

I have these three 14″ x 11″ paintings,: The Places I Go, Bee Mine, and Bee Happy  framed  in lovely black and golf frames ready to ship for the special price post studio tour price of $400.  Please email me at susanmedyn(at)cox.net  if interested. This is a one time half price offer to celebrate the wonders of the fall.

My hurricane photos have been used in several articles. I found these in a quirky antique shop.

Here is one photo being used in  Smithsonian Magazine.

You can see a peek of how my paintings look framed above David Formanek’s latest sculptures.

Here you can see some of the work we displayed for South Coast Artists Open Studio Tours this summer. We thank all our collectors and visitors for coming out and seeing our art.

Stay tuned for more adventures of our coastal Rhode Island life and art. Soon I will be posting my foray into honey elixirs.

Feeling Grateful~

susan1Large copy

I created this image for the Tiverton Land Trust Land and Sea Gala coming up July 31st! It is a truly special event and a very worthy cause to support. Carmen Grinkis is chairing this event and she has done a fabulous job. The art auction is not to be missed, and the menu a veritable feast!

This painting was sold to a big patron of the arts and I feel truly blessed to know that it will be enjoyed and appreciated for it’s unique style and humor. Note that the lobster is getting a little fondle from his lovely date. For more information and to get your tickets or make a donation you can follow this link: www.tivertonlandtrust.org

Also a huge thank you to South Coast Artists for making this weekend an incredible event…11 years strong and I was graced with so many visitors and buyers that I am a bit overwhelmed. Open studios is such an amazing event with about 70 artists displaying their work in their studios and homes. The second round is coming up the 3rd weekend in August and I am busy making companion pieces for my sea series (Mr. Lobster is making an appearing in most of them). I hope to see you for the August tours if you haven’t had a chance to make it to this past weekends. For a brochure and artist information go to www.southcoastartists.org

For those interested, I am making scarves from this image and I think they will be rocking fun. Susan’s Wonderland can be right with you all gracing your clothes.

Happy summer!

Pontus Parties

IMG_6800

I was introduced to Greek mythology by my husband and have  taken a great interest in learning about the Greek deities. We especially enjoy looking at Greek vases but would happily take another trip to Greece to explore more temples and sites.

You can see this painting as well as my new sea series at Open Studios this weekend July 19th and 20th  from 11AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday. I will have lots of new work on display.

There are so many wonderful artists exhibiting from their studios this year that I am sure it will be a great event.

This link takes you to a downloadable map. http://southcoastartists.org/sample-page-2/tour-map/

I am number 5 on the tour map.

This is a 7″ by 5″ ink and watercolor on Aquabord.

Egyptian Jungle and Bitsy Update.

Egyptian Jungle

I have always loved looking at  Greek objects especially those that have creatures in the Egyptian Orientalizing style. We were fortunate to see many at the Antikensammlung Museum in Munich, Germany. I only had time to make a few sketch’s as we had so much to see.  I was able to  incorporate some of my drawings into this 12″ by 9″ Ink and watercolor on Aqua Board. The owl is listening in. Maybe he will get to hear about our trip. I promise I will get to that in a future blog post. This painting has sold.

IMG_2836

I am happy to report that Bitsy is feeling better. She is moving around more and needs such careful watching. Keeping her from jumping onto furniture is quite the challenge.

Thank you everyone who has participated in my cart sale. It was a tremendous success. I have mailed out all the paintings and cards and have heard that some people have already received them. I just need to arrange delivery of 2 paintings. I cannot tell you how thankful I am by the outpouring of  love for Bitsy and our plight. As I type she is resting her paw on my hand.

I still have a few more paintings at special Cat + Art sale prices that I will be posting soon. Joanne Grant will also be doing a special cart blog post on Monday August 12th so hop over to her site and take a peak. Her pastels are not to be missed. And of course open studios is coming up August 17th and 18th. The South Coast is absolutely gorgeous this time of year and the ocean swimming is great.

She’s Glowing! and monthly Gicleé and IPhone cover winner.

She's Glowing

I love bright pinks and this lady sure likes it too.  So what is going on here.

There are two creatures happily conversing while the south wind hangs out waiting for my wing propelled snail to pass by before fluttering Eve’s bridal veil. The snakes are contained in the plants so the are no apples to tempt Eve.

A slight departure on my painting today. After I used permanent ink, I washed the aqua board with hot water and soap thus lightening the ink outlines. Notice the difference?

Thank you to everyone who has signed up for my blog this month. Chris D. won the Iphone cover with one of my leopards on it and Kim, who helped my husband pick out a new iPhone,  won the gicleé.  Congratulations.

Soon we will be going to Europe and we are barely organized. Luckily our children have decided to spend some time here while we are gone so the cats will be well taken care of.

This painting is 6″ by 6″ and is for sale for $100.00

The World Goes Round and Round, 6″ by 6″ Watercolor on Aqua Board

The World Goes Round and Round

2013 brings a painting challenge that I am participating in.

It is Leslie Saeta’s 30 days of painting challenge for the month of January. If you go to her blog you can take a look at all the artists who are participating. Their new work will be posted daily.

I have started off with this this slice of my world but as I am taking a painting class this month, I will not be sticking with a theme. Rather I will be painting what I know and then what I am practicing. Taking on this challenge  feels right for the New Year.

To purchase this painting just click on the Paypal button below.

Chickens, Watercolors, Open Studios and Baby Bluefish

Demo for Open Studios

Open Studios have passed and with it the flurry of activity painting, prepping, promoting and then meeting so many lovely visitors who came to see my work. I enjoyed giving a demo of the steps involved in making my paintings.

I got quite involved in making  chickens this summer. I found that adding borders to my work has brought an illustrative quality to it.

A Couple Of Cute Chicks!

These girls are on 8″ by 8 ”  Ink and Watercolor on aqua board and are framed in a distressed frame that works well with the subject matter.  This work is for sale for $150 plus $10 shipping or 2 for $275. If interested please email me at susanmedyn@cox.net.

I also made this very royal looking chicken who is wearing some very gorgeous feathers. This is another 8″ by 8″ Ink and Watercolor on aqua board, also for sale for $150 plus $10 shipping or 2 for $275. They make a lovely pair of paintings.

Fluff Full!

I was working on a drawing at a friends studio today and we both noticed the lack of humidity in the air, a sense that fall is approaching although the days are warm and the wildlife abundant. I spent the evening swimming and catching some baby blue fish AKA snappers for those of you who  live on Long Island and  skipjacks to the locals.
