HIDE AND SEEK, DAY 11 OF 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS

cat in poppies

y daughter asked me to paint more poppies and I am happy to add these soporific flowers into my paintings. I originally started out with a bunny again but our orange tabby Arthur was posing so sweetly that I  changed the painting to include him. I continue to make Henri Rousseau like paintings and will have several in the Art Naif Festival in Katowice Poland this summer.

This is a 5″ by 7″ Ink and Watercolor painting on Aqua Board and includes some of my imaginary plants and creatures. To purchase click on the buy now button or contact me at susanmedyn(at)cox.net

WATCHING YOU!, 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS, DAY 3

Watching You!

This leopard was just woken from his nap and is looking at you. The bushes are hiding snakes and the lizard is climbing the tree.

This is my 3rd in a month long project of 30 paintings in 30 days started by Leslie Saeta. I continue to make paintings influenced by the  style of Henri Rousseau. I have 3 large ones and a small one inked in that I am hoping to paint during over the month of January plus several ideas percolating in my head.

This painting is 5 by 7 and is Ink and Watercolor on Aqua Board that I varnish and place in a shadow box. SOLD

Flaubert’s Stroll

Flaubert’s Stroll

Flaubert is taking a stroll through the jungle looking for someone to play with. He is a young elephant who has made friends with the kind giraffe and the rather raunchous leopard. He  has a lighter and bluer sky in his background than this photo depicts. Night photography did not capture this as well as I would have liked.

Flaubert would be happy to come to your home for the holidays. He is 5″ by 7″ and framed in an oak and black shadow box. There are finely ground mica chips in much of the paint so this painting glows in the most delightful way. This is an ink and watercolor painting on aqua board  that is varnished so that one doesn’t need glass to protect it.

This painting is for sale for $250 plus shipping.

Gustave’s Reverie

This is a 5″ by 7″ Ink and Watercolor painting on Aqua Board of Gustave the  very mellow and friendly elephant who is dreaming about the holidays. Gustave is varnished and framed in a shadow box of black and oak. Gustave is for sale for $250. I have always continued to admire the work of Henri Rousseau and although this work is clearly in my style it is reflective of the influence of  Rousseau. Gustave can be seen at The Art Stable Gallery Westport through December 23, 2012.

Flower Power with a little help from my friends.

Flower Power

I have been reworking this painting with some advice from Don Cadoret, Kathrine Lovell, and David Formanek and  here it is! I found a lovely wooden shadow box to frame it in and it really makes this work pop out. I am busily trying to finish several Henri Rousseau influenced paintings for The Art Stable Gallery Westport’s Holiday Open House on Sunday November 18th from 2-5PM.

All 8 artists will be present with lots of new work so this will be a great afternoon to stop on by.

This is a 6″ by 6″ Ink and Watercolor on Aqua Board and is for sale for $200.00 framed in a shadow box.

Kind of knocks my socks off.

Sold.

Need your help with cranky bird phrases!!!!

OK, so I had some friends over and had Carla Sohnheim’s 2 great books on the table. I showed everyone how to start a cranky birds.  They cooperated, possibly thanks to good cheer, drinks, a beautiful day and lots of art supplies on the table. I want to forward them to Dar Hosta, http://darhosta.wordpress.com/cranky-birds/ but I need some help with sayings. Storyteller artist Don Cadoret turned me on to his friend Dar’s blog and it is so cool. Don’s work is really quite fabulous and he has an opening this Thursday of his new works in Bristol, RI. Check out his work for a real treat.

http://www.doncadoret.net/New_IMAGES.php

Everyone made something out of their blob but any and all suggestions for what each bird is saying would be greatly appreciated!!!

OK…………so……….. HELP!!!!!!!

I’ll even send something good and fun and maybe drawn by me to the person who makes the best caption!

Bare Bear, Partridge In Therapy and Dophins on the Sakonnet!

PARTRIDGE IN THERAPY!

This gilded partridge was inspired by a magazine cover. My partridge  looks as though he might have a hard time flying. I think this 8″ by 8″ Ink and Watercolor on Aqua board is a cool bird. Paypal link above watercolor painting.

Bare Bear was inspired by a bronze bear on the grounds of the magnificent  Grove Park Inn  http://www.groveparkinn.com/in Asheville, North Carolina. Bare Bear is also on aqua board. He is headed for a new home. I am continuing to make whimsical watercolors on aqua board as well as  watercolor paper.  Will soon be posting my  latest work  which is a series of Holiday and Solstice Cards.

On a very wonderful note, yesterday I received an email from  friends who were boating on the Sakonnet River and had 2 dolphins join them for their cocktail hour. I feel so fortunate to spend so much time in such a beautiful area. I will also be at the Art Stable Gallery http://www.artstablegallery.com/ today from noon until 4:00PM. Please come by and visit. I always love to see everyone.

HAPPY CHAPPY

Here is a new painting of my curious creatures in  conversational triads. There are a few trumpeter‘s in the picture to remind me of my son who played the trumpet until he went off to college.

This painting is 9″ by 12″ Ink and Watercolor on Arches 300 pound cold press paper. It is for sale for  $400 framed in a light maple frame.

Sunday night was the opening of Birds of A Feather and it was a truly hopping event. Paintings were flying off the walls. I have 2 chicken  paintings in the far right corner of this picture. They are on aqua board.

The show is open until September 22nd so there is plenty of time to  stop in and see the work and maybe pick up a wonderful piece of art. This year there were many chickens, interesting bird’s nests, beautiful bird pottery, cedian painted pillows, bird jewelry, encaustic, a photo of an egret on aluminum- it sold before the opening and someone ordered a second one- and some really cool gulls along with many paintings.

The show is at Kathrine Lovell’s studio at the shops at Mill Pond in Tiverton Four Corners, Tiverton, RI.

Beautiful weather these past few days. Catching many skip jacks, snappers or baby blues depending on where you are from. Had a wonderful swim last night as the water turned a glorious pink due to the reflection of  the sun and the clouds at sunset.

We were graced with company from Kelley MacDonald,

http://kelleymacdonalddailypaint.blogspot.com/

and her husband Tim who took a try at surf casting as we saw schools of   being chased away by jumping blues. those blues provided us with dinner last night and we had enough to enjoy them for dinner last night as well.

Tough Bird

My friend Kathrine Lovell lent me a book on various chickens and I liked the pose of this one. I love  the look on his face. He seems to be saying “Don’t mess with me”. I have the feeling I have raised a chicken like this before. He wouldn’t go in his house, he strutted across the road in Arlington, MA, he slept on the top of a chair on our porch and he led the rest of the birds down the road to meet Alex as he got off the school bus every day.

Chickens though aren’t destined for long lives and one day a mama fox snatched him away.

This guy is painted on  2″ deep cradled aqua board and is 6″ by 6″ and for sale for $150 plus $10.00 shipping. If you are interested please contact me at susanmedyn@cox.net.

I am busy making these chicks for upcoming South Coast Artist Open Studios August 18th and 19th. It is a great weekend to come on down and tour the many artists studios in this lovely coastal area. www.southcoastartists.org for more information.
