SCAPES, 30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS, DAY 7 AND LOVING IT.

city scape

I am working a lot of hours today so did a play with colors to make a cityscape. I love looking out from the upper story of my mother-in-law’s Manhattan apartment and seeing the view. This painting is 5″ by 7″ and is on aqua board. It is varnished so needs no glass for hanging. To see some of the work of the over 200 painters who have taken on Leslie Saeta’s challenge just click on her name and you can take a look at all the wonderful paintings.

Flaubert’s Stroll

Flaubert’s Stroll

Flaubert is taking a stroll through the jungle looking for someone to play with. He is a young elephant who has made friends with the kind giraffe and the rather raunchous leopard. He  has a lighter and bluer sky in his background than this photo depicts. Night photography did not capture this as well as I would have liked.

Flaubert would be happy to come to your home for the holidays. He is 5″ by 7″ and framed in an oak and black shadow box. There are finely ground mica chips in much of the paint so this painting glows in the most delightful way. This is an ink and watercolor painting on aqua board  that is varnished so that one doesn’t need glass to protect it.

This painting is for sale for $250 plus shipping.

Gustave’s Reverie

This is a 5″ by 7″ Ink and Watercolor painting on Aqua Board of Gustave the  very mellow and friendly elephant who is dreaming about the holidays. Gustave is varnished and framed in a shadow box of black and oak. Gustave is for sale for $250. I have always continued to admire the work of Henri Rousseau and although this work is clearly in my style it is reflective of the influence of  Rousseau. Gustave can be seen at The Art Stable Gallery Westport through December 23, 2012.

Work at Ropewalk Gallery in Mattapoisett, MA

Work at Ropewalk Gallery, Mattapoisett, Ma

Just thought I would add a photo of my work at The Ropewalk Gallery in Mattapoisett, MA.

Had a fun evening at the Fall River Historical Society  with artist Kelley Carey MacDonald and her mother-in-law on Saturday night at a a reception for  artists who donated a piece to their auction. The Lizzie Borden room is a bit macabre and has some actual evidence in their cases but the house is beautiful and is decorated so nicely for the holidays. A lovely find for an outing.

Kiss Me and work in progress.

This is a 6″ by 6″ ink and watercolor on aqua board. The man in the middle is filling his glass but the spotted pink creature is longing for a kiss. This work is for sale for $65 plus $5 shipping. Paypal button is above painting.

Working on this new style where I will be painting the entire page.

This is a Rousseau like to me and I am so enamored of his work. I wish I could see every painting he ever made.

I think it will be stellar. This design is copyright protected. Reproduction is not allowed.

Bare Bear, Partridge In Therapy and Dophins on the Sakonnet!

PARTRIDGE IN THERAPY!

This gilded partridge was inspired by a magazine cover. My partridge  looks as though he might have a hard time flying. I think this 8″ by 8″ Ink and Watercolor on Aqua board is a cool bird. Paypal link above watercolor painting.

Bare Bear was inspired by a bronze bear on the grounds of the magnificent  Grove Park Inn  http://www.groveparkinn.com/in Asheville, North Carolina. Bare Bear is also on aqua board. He is headed for a new home. I am continuing to make whimsical watercolors on aqua board as well as  watercolor paper.  Will soon be posting my  latest work  which is a series of Holiday and Solstice Cards.

On a very wonderful note, yesterday I received an email from  friends who were boating on the Sakonnet River and had 2 dolphins join them for their cocktail hour. I feel so fortunate to spend so much time in such a beautiful area. I will also be at the Art Stable Gallery http://www.artstablegallery.com/ today from noon until 4:00PM. Please come by and visit. I always love to see everyone.

2 Self Taught Artists from Europe and Holiday Cards

A work by Chantal Sellan

I found the work of French artist Chantal Sellan while browsing the web. She worked as a psychologist for many years. She was born in 1936  and started painting in 1980. Her works are in many public  and private collections.

Another self taught artist I found is from Denmark. Inge Selmer was born the same year I was (and I am not telling when that was)….but I love this Henri Rousseau like painting. She spent many years working in reflexology before starting her art career in 1983.  She has exhibited since 2004.

I have been working on some small paintings on aqua board of curious creatures and continue to work on my ink and watercolors of garden parties held by imaginary animals.

I am also making a series of Holiday Cards that I plan to have printed.

I like the simplicity of this one. It is on white watercolor paper but taking photo’s in the afternoon does not always get good results, especially when there is a cat jumping on the table repeatedly.

The Caterpillar’s Hookah

I always loved Alice In Wonderland and have some framed chromolithographs in my office from an old book I had. One is Alice reaching up to the caterpillar on his mushroom. They remind me of my childhood being read to by my parents at bedtime.

I met a man during open studios who has several characters from Alice in Wonderland tattooed on him and they were quite cool. I wish he could have seen this painting. It has been on the wall of Partners General Store in Westport, MA.

Notice the smirk the cat has:

That cat may already have had too much catnip. But cats deserve to have fun. As do we.

This painting is 8″ by 10″ on aqua board and is framed in a maple frame. It is for sale for $150.00 plus 10.00 shipping.

Chickens, Watercolors, Open Studios and Baby Bluefish

Demo for Open Studios

Open Studios have passed and with it the flurry of activity painting, prepping, promoting and then meeting so many lovely visitors who came to see my work. I enjoyed giving a demo of the steps involved in making my paintings.

I got quite involved in making  chickens this summer. I found that adding borders to my work has brought an illustrative quality to it.

A Couple Of Cute Chicks!

These girls are on 8″ by 8 ”  Ink and Watercolor on aqua board and are framed in a distressed frame that works well with the subject matter.  This work is for sale for $150 plus $10 shipping or 2 for $275. If interested please email me at susanmedyn@cox.net.

I also made this very royal looking chicken who is wearing some very gorgeous feathers. This is another 8″ by 8″ Ink and Watercolor on aqua board, also for sale for $150 plus $10 shipping or 2 for $275. They make a lovely pair of paintings.

Fluff Full!

I was working on a drawing at a friends studio today and we both noticed the lack of humidity in the air, a sense that fall is approaching although the days are warm and the wildlife abundant. I spent the evening swimming and catching some baby blue fish AKA snappers for those of you who  live on Long Island and  skipjacks to the locals.
