Tough Bird

My friend Kathrine Lovell lent me a book on various chickens and I liked the pose of this one. I love  the look on his face. He seems to be saying “Don’t mess with me”. I have the feeling I have raised a chicken like this before. He wouldn’t go in his house, he strutted across the road in Arlington, MA, he slept on the top of a chair on our porch and he led the rest of the birds down the road to meet Alex as he got off the school bus every day.

Chickens though aren’t destined for long lives and one day a mama fox snatched him away.

This guy is painted on  2″ deep cradled aqua board and is 6″ by 6″ and for sale for $150 plus $10.00 shipping. If you are interested please contact me at susanmedyn@cox.net.

I am busy making these chicks for upcoming South Coast Artist Open Studios August 18th and 19th. It is a great weekend to come on down and tour the many artists studios in this lovely coastal area. www.southcoastartists.org for more information.

One from the Hawaii series and dining al fresco!

Shall We Dine?, Ink and Watercolor, 9″ by 12″, Private Collection

Think how nice it would be to eat al fresco on a lovely June day enjoying the company of friends and family. I love to celebrate the wonderful June birthdays in our family, my spouse, David,  and our son, Alex. Soon followed by our daughter Anthea’s birthday  and my sister-in-law, Ellen’s in early July.

I drew this painting while on a lovely vacation to Hawaii this past January. The trip was a present from my sister, who is one of my greatest supporters running neck and neck with my spouse who has always, and I mean always, encouraged me to continue making the kinds of paintings I make.

While in Hawaii, we sat on our balcony and watched rays swimming  below us ( there is one on the left side of the picture) and saw whales go by as we ate our breakfast . The plant life in Hawaii was even more colorful than my paintings and I have many photos of flowers and trees so I can include them in future paintings.

And it would be great if you are  able to come to the Art Stable Gallery Westport’s opening bash on June 22nd from 6:00PM to 8:30PM at 865 Main Road in Westport, MA. I have many works there with 7 other wonderful artists, Kelley MacDonald, Sara Fielding Gunn, Nancy Whittin, Kelly Milukas, Joney Swift, Kathleen Gray, and Karen Raus. The first party of the summer is always special.

So happy to post this new works. Would love to hear what you think about them.

What are these things?

I Want To Hold Your Hand, 5″ by 7″ on aqua board. $ 95.00

I am having a lot of fun using a new surface for my paintings. I am making works on aqua board and think I will continue doing this as well as make my watercolors on Arches 300 pound watercolor paper.

This is called “Hair Grows” and is an Ink and Watercolor on aqua board. I like making smaller works. This is 6″ by 6″ and is SOLD. Thank you Jane. It will have a wonderful home.Thinking that this creature seems to be really mellow. Working on feeling that way too.

Looking for Lunch, 6″ by 6″ Ink and Watercolor on a 2″ deep cradle board.

Well, I was not as pleased with this one. My daughter likes it though so it will have a good home. I have found an interesting book, The Outsider Artist Resource Handbook and although I am not an outsider artist I am self-taught and a visionary artist. I have some works at a group show right now at Rope Walk Gallery in Mattapoisett, MA and at Imperial Gallery in Providence, RI.  I also have several works at The Artful Heart in Arlington, MA. I would love to hear what you think of these new little guys.

I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND AMONG OTHER THINGS….

I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND

My friend Karen Raus of http://www.rausphotography.com/  has been using cradle board to do encaustics utilizing her photography and paintings. I was interested in working on a surface other than paper so ordered some cradle boards from good ole Jerry’s Artarama and this is my first finished one. I love some of the mottling I can get using this material and am now working on several more.

This is a small 5″ by 7″ painting that is sold.

I am looking forward to working with this new board and have some 2 inch deep ones that I am thinking of doing a fish series on.

This weekend we were at a  Memorial Service for a wonderful man and musician, Richard Lainhart. He has made some of the most incredible music and you can hear some of it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7NMc_FQdts and at other links on YouTube and on the web. Richard was such a kind and gentle man. His wife, Caroline Meyers, was filled with such calm and composure at the Memorial  that one was able to feel the serenity and love regarding the life of this man who left our world much too soon.

Another reminder to spend each day living and loving.

Open Studios and the fish were a big hit!

Wonderful swim at the end of the day. Some nice bouncy waves.

A little seaweed. Think it is healthful to swim among the leaves.

A Little Bit of Fun!

The Cat and the Fiddle, 2011, 9" by 9", $250

This is a painting I made for the brochure of South Coast Artists www.southcoastartists.org for this summers open studios. I normally don’t make square paintings but I think my friends in the painting  are anything but square.

Stone Sole Picnic, Ink and Watercolor, 9" by 12", 2011, Sold! but I have limited edition gicleés of this work for sale for $60.00 matted to 11' by 14" and beautifully framed in a silver bamboo frame for $125.00 inclusive of shipping and handling within the continental US.

I was having fun with this years theme  of “Heart and Soul” for South Coasts Artists. I had to take things literally and put a little sole into my work. I originally thought I would title it “Eat Your Heart Out”,  as my sole has his mouth open ready to eat  some hearty seaweed, but since this sole was up against a wall, I had fun with the pun. And this just sold to a dear dear friend who I had worked with many years ago. Thank you Sue!
