Flaubert’s Stroll

Flaubert’s Stroll

Flaubert is taking a stroll through the jungle looking for someone to play with. He is a young elephant who has made friends with the kind giraffe and the rather raunchous leopard. He  has a lighter and bluer sky in his background than this photo depicts. Night photography did not capture this as well as I would have liked.

Flaubert would be happy to come to your home for the holidays. He is 5″ by 7″ and framed in an oak and black shadow box. There are finely ground mica chips in much of the paint so this painting glows in the most delightful way. This is an ink and watercolor painting on aqua board  that is varnished so that one doesn’t need glass to protect it.

This painting is for sale for $250 plus shipping.

Bare Bear, Partridge In Therapy and Dophins on the Sakonnet!

PARTRIDGE IN THERAPY!

This gilded partridge was inspired by a magazine cover. My partridge  looks as though he might have a hard time flying. I think this 8″ by 8″ Ink and Watercolor on Aqua board is a cool bird. Paypal link above watercolor painting.

Bare Bear was inspired by a bronze bear on the grounds of the magnificent  Grove Park Inn  http://www.groveparkinn.com/in Asheville, North Carolina. Bare Bear is also on aqua board. He is headed for a new home. I am continuing to make whimsical watercolors on aqua board as well as  watercolor paper.  Will soon be posting my  latest work  which is a series of Holiday and Solstice Cards.

On a very wonderful note, yesterday I received an email from  friends who were boating on the Sakonnet River and had 2 dolphins join them for their cocktail hour. I feel so fortunate to spend so much time in such a beautiful area. I will also be at the Art Stable Gallery http://www.artstablegallery.com/ today from noon until 4:00PM. Please come by and visit. I always love to see everyone.

2 Self Taught Artists from Europe and Holiday Cards

A work by Chantal Sellan

I found the work of French artist Chantal Sellan while browsing the web. She worked as a psychologist for many years. She was born in 1936  and started painting in 1980. Her works are in many public  and private collections.

Another self taught artist I found is from Denmark. Inge Selmer was born the same year I was (and I am not telling when that was)….but I love this Henri Rousseau like painting. She spent many years working in reflexology before starting her art career in 1983.  She has exhibited since 2004.

I have been working on some small paintings on aqua board of curious creatures and continue to work on my ink and watercolors of garden parties held by imaginary animals.

I am also making a series of Holiday Cards that I plan to have printed.

I like the simplicity of this one. It is on white watercolor paper but taking photo’s in the afternoon does not always get good results, especially when there is a cat jumping on the table repeatedly.

Cool Chicks Undercover

I was looking though one of my books and noticed a black and white 18th century lithograph of 2 chicks with their mom. I decided that I would like to make a painting of 2 little ones with their big fluffy mom Medyn style. The colors really pop in this painting.

I find it touching how all animals protect their babies. Having had 2 babes of my own I know how that protective instinct kicks in the second your child is born. Then it is on to a life time of balancing protecting and letting go.

This painting is  an ink and watercolor on 2 inch deep aqua board and is 8″ by 8″. It is ready to hang and is for sale for $250 plus $15.00 shipping. If interested please contact me at susanmedyn@cox.net

Open studio tours are coming up on August 18th and 19th and make for a really lovely day trip. There are so many wonderful artists on this upcoming tour. Hope you get a chance to come on down.

Love is wonderful.

Elin and Anthony Kiwi celebrate their anniversary!

I was commissioned to make a kiwi bird painting for a lovely woman celebrating her first anniversary with her husband who is from  Australia. She asked for a kiwi bird. Thus this new painting. I am so happy with the outcome. It is wonderful to create something celebrating love. A gift in itself to me. As it happened when I dropped off the painting to her mom as Elin was at work, her mother recognized me as the person who had come  with David into this wonderful church in Tiverton, RI  on Highland Rd. It unfortunately was sold due to declining congregation and her parents were there cleaning things out. She and her husband were nice enough to let us take pictures of the church which had some wonderful features, curved pews,  and of course, lovely stained glass. The new owner has never done anything with it, possibly because of the market downturn. I think as an artist one of the greatest gifts is to make something out of love and Elin was so delightful in her emails that I knew that I was making a very special painting for a very special couple.
I am thinking of using this little guy as my inspiration for the next painting. Had 2 lovely long swims in Tiverton, RI Saturday. We are renting it out the next two weeks to a lovely family from Pittsburgh. Their son is marrying a woman form Portsmouth, RI. He also did Teach For America, like Anthea’s husband Shamus did and will be working for the New Orleans School System helping to improve their educational system. It is so nice to rent to people who are celebrating the marriage of their son, and they are very lovely as well. They have a younger son who is  a pilot studying aviation to be come employed as a pilot. Very cool. And her son to wed worked right in Anthea and Shamus’s neighborhood. The world is small. Alex and their sons were chatting away as we were ready to leave so they could get settled after their 12 hours on the road. Cograts to the soon to be newlyweds.

Open Studios and the fish were a big hit!

Wonderful swim at the end of the day. Some nice bouncy waves.

A little seaweed. Think it is healthful to swim among the leaves.

A new drawing I am working on.

I loved making my drawing of a sole so much that I am making some fish drawings. Here is one I started yesterday.

I haven’t posted in a bit as we have been busy getting our Arlington house ready for sale. It is coming along great but we are thinking we will put it on the market in the fall as we have too much going on right now. While we prepare for a wedding and Alex going off to college, we won’t have to be at the ready to clean and evacuate the house for prospective buyers.

I loved the sole fish I painted recently and have made another one that I will post soon. I am enjoying the idea of making large sea creatures and will play with that for a bit.

Drawing and painting are such a source of satisfaction for me. I will have several new works for open studios this summer. I need to take a  class in order to really get better photos of my work. I also need a new camera and that is on my wish list.
