Tough Bird

My friend Kathrine Lovell lent me a book on various chickens and I liked the pose of this one. I love  the look on his face. He seems to be saying “Don’t mess with me”. I have the feeling I have raised a chicken like this before. He wouldn’t go in his house, he strutted across the road in Arlington, MA, he slept on the top of a chair on our porch and he led the rest of the birds down the road to meet Alex as he got off the school bus every day.

Chickens though aren’t destined for long lives and one day a mama fox snatched him away.

This guy is painted on  2″ deep cradled aqua board and is 6″ by 6″ and for sale for $150 plus $10.00 shipping. If you are interested please contact me at susanmedyn@cox.net.

I am busy making these chicks for upcoming South Coast Artist Open Studios August 18th and 19th. It is a great weekend to come on down and tour the many artists studios in this lovely coastal area. www.southcoastartists.org for more information.

What are these things?

I Want To Hold Your Hand, 5″ by 7″ on aqua board. $ 95.00

I am having a lot of fun using a new surface for my paintings. I am making works on aqua board and think I will continue doing this as well as make my watercolors on Arches 300 pound watercolor paper.

This is called “Hair Grows” and is an Ink and Watercolor on aqua board. I like making smaller works. This is 6″ by 6″ and is SOLD. Thank you Jane. It will have a wonderful home.Thinking that this creature seems to be really mellow. Working on feeling that way too.

Looking for Lunch, 6″ by 6″ Ink and Watercolor on a 2″ deep cradle board.

Well, I was not as pleased with this one. My daughter likes it though so it will have a good home. I have found an interesting book, The Outsider Artist Resource Handbook and although I am not an outsider artist I am self-taught and a visionary artist. I have some works at a group show right now at Rope Walk Gallery in Mattapoisett, MA and at Imperial Gallery in Providence, RI.  I also have several works at The Artful Heart in Arlington, MA. I would love to hear what you think of these new little guys.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year

I want to wish everyone a wonderful 2012 filled with small gifts and love. I have had quite a journey in 2011 and am looking forward to working  a tad less, painting more and enjoying my family. We have had so many changes as a family this year…our daughter getting married, our son going to college, moving to a new house, losing loved ones, David finding a new job, me gaining better health, and my office mate getting ready to move to Alaska. I will miss her terribly, but know she needs to move forward and she is excited about relocating to the west coast. My sister is also taking me on a trip to Hawaii in less than 2 weeks and I am so excited for that.

Thanks to all of you who have kept up with my blog. I really appreciate your support and comments.

So he has no name as yet but he is a he and for sale...

I am really happy with the outcome of this wooly emu as my friend Peri said or some sort of cross between an elephant and a medynological creature. I have been having a great time making this sole paintings and feel that this direction is a good one for me. I am still working on several multi-character paintings but have been concentrating on these. My Hyrda Symdra and If You Love Him Slug Him individual creature paintings are sold and that is great!  they have good homes to be happy in.

Feeling the September cool and missing summer warmth. Swam and fished yesterday and then went down to Warren’s Point for the sunset. It is a lovely beach with huge granite bedrock offshore, one with carved in steps to climb up and around and jump into the ocean. Ah, Rhode Island, a very calm place for me.

When It Rains It Pours

I am having trouble with my camera. Time to get a new one. Unfortunately my pictures didn’t come out as well as I would have liked. But have some fun taking a look at some of my new work.

DO YOU TAKE THIS CREATURE?, 9" x 12", 2011, $400

Love the anemone in this one!

WAITING FOR POGO, 9" x 12", 2011, $300

From the Okefenokee Swamp where the celebrated opossum Pogo Lives. The light wasn’t great for photographing as I need a new camera. Do you know that a cross eyed opossum named Heidi is currently Germany’s biggest star with 290,000 facebook fans?
And she is a rescue possum. I often feel like I am rescuing my creatures from my mind so that they have a nice place to live.
Waiting for Pogo is a 9″ by 12″ Ink and Watercolor done on 140 pound hot press arches watercolor paper.

VANISHING ACT, 2011, 9" x 12"

I love this painting. Notice how many creature only have part of them in the picture. I am sending this one over to a gallery in Newport next week.

I only hope spring will spring into action soon!
