Booby Hatch

Booby Hatch © SUSAN MEDYN

BOOBY HATCH $400 framed.

I love the little Dr. Suess like lady in pink in this painting. I think the character on the left with the hat could even qualify for a Suess like creature. One thing that the urban dictionary states is that the Booby Hatch was a hatch meant to keep a small sea-bird named the boobie from flying below deck. One type actually has beautiful blue feet~I must add them to one of my paintings!

Take this title however you like but it is breast cancer awareness month and I am donating 1/4 of  the proceeds of all October sales to Breastcancer.org

They are an amazing organization that provides support and information for women through all stages of breast cancer. I have met so many amazing women through them and want to give back for all they have given to me. Everyone deserves a fighting chance and breastcancer.org has led so many women to seek life saving treatment  that they would not have known about except for this incredible site.

I love this painting of my curious creatures in  conversational triads. Check out the floating duets hovering above the crowd.

There are a few trumpeter‘s in the picture to remind me of my son who played the trumpet until he went off to college.

This painting is 9″ by 12″ Ink and Watercolor on Arches 300 pound cold press paper. It is for sale for  $400 framed in a light maple frame.

Monkey Business

Monkey Business

Monkey Business                      $110 including shipping.  6″ x 6″ Framed

Did you ever want to create a little monkey business, play tricks- not like the 3 Stooges, but stir up a little trouble. We have had a few great April Fool’s tricks in the past 2 years. Two years ago we put up signs that said “Fresh Eggs” and left several dozen eggs in a cooler with a cigar box in front of our friends. Last year we placed a number of pink construction flags in the yard of a friend and made some construction markings. Our friends had the night before diverted a neighbors water-spout and worried that they neighbors had called the town. Haven’t thought up next years April Fools.

Hurricane of ’38 a day late.

While searching for info, I found this link on the Hurricane of ’38 which really sums up  the day.

Here are some old photos of the Providence, RI area that I have donated to NOAA.

With the predictions about the oceans rising and the contested climate change, I believe that we will be seeing more great hurricanes in our lifetime.

I wanted to post a lovely little 6 by 6 fish painting already framed. $100 SOLD

Speaking of fish, we were reeling in the skip jacks today.

Looks like we will be having fish for dinner for the next 3 days.

And if you are thinking about purchasing art, this is a nice time to get ahead of the holiday rush.

Cuttyhunk Union Methodist Church

cuttyhunk church use for blog

Yes, it has taken me a year to finish this painting, but I was determined to complete it before this years’ artist retreat and that I did with a little help from 2 of my muses: Kelley Carey MacDonald and of course David. Kelley and David gave me much-needed advice on how to get the values right and oh I am happy with this painting! (Click on her link and scroll down to see her work and me painting  the church on her porch last week).

I feel so blessed to have such talented, spirited and generous artists in my life.  I knew my painting did not have that kick and Kelley told me to be bold and then bolder! David kept reminding me that I needed to work right up to every edge. Well I listened, and here is this lovely simple church that sits so peacefully on the hill. This painting is a gift for a dear friend.

This is a far cry from my start last year, but I will be brave and show you how it looked.

I am happy to be spending 6 wonderful days on this peaceful island. No cars, no charge cards, no cell service (unless you climb to the lookout) and lots of time to paint, have great meals, chat, swim and meditate.

Quadrille Lessons

Quadrille lesssons©

Oh the lobster, he will teach us to dance!

“Will you walk a little faster?”
Said a whiting to a snail,
“There’s a porpoise close behind us,
Treading on my tail.”
See how eagerly the lobsters
And the turtles all advance!
They are waiting on the shingle –
Will you come and join the dance?
So, will you, won’t you, won’t you,
Will you, won’t you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

“You can really have no notion
How delightful it will be
When they take us up and throw us,
With the lobsters, out to sea!”
But the snail replied, “Too far, too far!”
And gave a look askance –
Said he thanked the whiting kindly,
But he would not join the dance.
So, would not, could not, would not,
Could not, would not join the dance.
Would not, could not, would not,
Could not, could not join the dance.

“What matters it how far we go?”
His scaly friend replied,
“There is another shore, you know,
Upon the other side.
The further off from England
The nearer is to France –
Then turn not pale, beloved snail,
But come and join the dance.

Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, will you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, won’t you,
Will you, won’t you join the dance?

Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, won’t you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

Thank you Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) for the world you created for us. And to see the quadrille done traditionally click here, but I think the Jamaican Quadrille looks a lot more fun.

PS: One more day until I am on Cuttyhunk! Oh I am so excited. I feel so lucky to spend time with wonderful friends, artists, writers and have 5 glorious days to paint and relax!

Poppy Trio

I had hoped to get more done today, but a sniffle got in my way. As I am going to Cuttyhunk Friday for an artist retreat, I thought it best to get some R & R.

Sat by the beach and watched the birds diving as the bluefish stirred up the water. And made a few small poppy paintings.

Need to get cracking and packing.

Alice’s Dream

Alice's Dream with ©I had such fun making the painting for the invitation to the Tiverton Land Trust Summer gala that I started working on a happy lobster series. Here is my latest one.

Yes, Alice is dreaming and fondling that lobster yet again!

And this weekend was quite eventful with August open studios. A special thanks to all the wonderful visitors I had this summer while participating in South Coast Artists Open Studio Tours. Nearly 70 artists participated in this event and this was a fabulous year for us. So many visitors and so many sales. I feel so grateful to be part of this supportive group. The night before the tours this weekend I had the most special experience. I was sitting at the beach while several egrets flew by. It was windy so they were flying low. I could hear the whoosh of the beating of their wings~a sound I had never even dreamed I would hear!

Alice’s Dream is 14″ by 10″ and is framed in a maple frame. It is looking quite cool hanging on the wall.
