Quadrille Lessons

Oh the lobster, he will teach us to dance!

“Will you walk a little faster?”
Said a whiting to a snail,
“There’s a porpoise close behind us,
Treading on my tail.”
See how eagerly the lobsters
And the turtles all advance!
They are waiting on the shingle –
Will you come and join the dance?
So, will you, won’t you, won’t you,
Will you, won’t you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

“You can really have no notion
How delightful it will be
When they take us up and throw us,
With the lobsters, out to sea!”
But the snail replied, “Too far, too far!”
And gave a look askance –
Said he thanked the whiting kindly,
But he would not join the dance.
So, would not, could not, would not,
Could not, would not join the dance.
Would not, could not, would not,
Could not, could not join the dance.

“What matters it how far we go?”
His scaly friend replied,
“There is another shore, you know,
Upon the other side.
The further off from England
The nearer is to France –
Then turn not pale, beloved snail,
But come and join the dance.

Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, will you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, won’t you,
Will you, won’t you join the dance?

Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, won’t you join the dance?
Will you, won’t you, will you,
Won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

Thank you Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) for the world you created for us. And to see the quadrille done traditionally click here, but I think the Jamaican Quadrille looks a lot more fun.

PS: One more day until I am on Cuttyhunk! Oh I am so excited. I feel so lucky to spend time with wonderful friends, artists, writers and have 5 glorious days to paint and relax!

This painting is a 14″ by 10″ Ink and Watercolor framed in a lovely maple frame. It also makes a nice companion piece to my earlier work in the last post Alice’s Party.

  1. Susan – these are magical! You should publish a book! As usual, I am entranced by your characterizations of these wonderful animals.
I also am very jealous of your upcoming vacation – how lucky you are to spend such quality time in such a beautiful place.

  2. Oh I agree a book would be amazing! Great post, lovely poem, and I do agree, the Jamaicans are having tons of fun! I love this… I will be thinking of dancing Lobsters and whoosits and wuzzels today!

  3. This poem suits this painting so well—just wonderful! I do have to echo the recommendation for Susan to write a book. It would be a smash seller.
