Flow

Mixed Media 6″ x 6″  SOLD

I am enjoying working and reworking a surface without getting caught up in the fine detail of my usual work. I do find that I am spending more time on my abstracts than I thought as I like to impregnate the image with color. This painting changes color in sunlight as you will see below, but best to keep paintings away from direct sunlight.

The image in the center is a piece of sponge that washed ashore after a particularly strong storm. I was able to collect several pieces that I am using for inspiration.

The lovely cobalt blue gouache and deep purple watercolors do not show up as well in the sunlight. The acrylic gold and bronze are painted over the watercolor and gouache and then worked by removing the metallic paint with a cloth or paper towel to get more texture on the surface.

 Mixed Media   6″ x 6″   SOLD

I always loved painting with metallics. For this painting I used bronze and dark gold acrylics and liquid watercolors.

Ebb and Flow

Watercolor 10″ x 8″ on 3/4″  Cradle board  $50.00

Happy New Year! 2014 was a year of transition as I fully moved my practice to the south shore of Massachusetts.  Winter and Spring were long and cool. Summer was filed with swimming, fishing and plenty of good eats from the sea. Before I knew it, fall was upon us and it was time to make our trek to Bennington for parents weekend (always a delight mixed with a hint of envy). Sunsets have been dramatic year round. The light is wonderful in this area. We have been blessed with good health, loving family and friends and  good food.  Arthur and Bitsy have been steadfast companions.

I am again participating in Leslie Saeta’s 30 in 30 challenge for the month of January. Nearly 1000 artists are participating from around the globe.I am moving outside my comfort zone to explore some more abstract paintings. It is time to challenge myself with some thing different, but I am continuing to make a sea series in watercolor.

Thank you everyone who was filled my blog over the past several years. I am so thankful for your support and comments. Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2015!

A slight but pleasant departure for me. I loved making this. When we were in Munich for an exhibit I was in, we stayed at a lovely small palace turned into a very pleasant hotel called Hotel Opera. The inner courtyard was where one had a hearty breakfast served on fine china.

While waiting for our food I drew part of a design from the sugar bowl. I never thought I would use it as inspiration for one of my paintings. When I needed to make a piece for a bird show, I thought how nice it would be to insert 3 little birds and some flowers into the sketch and work on designing a painting.

I enjoy the symmetry of this piece and have used the design for working on some “Crazy Pants” I am developing.

Hail The Mighty Snail

Hail The Mighty Snail

12″ by 9″ Ink and Watercolor $300

I do wonder what it would be like to move like a snail and carry my house on my back. Simplifying seems a good way to go. So cheers to the small but mighty snail.

Who Designed Your Clothes?

Who Designed Your Clothes?, 12"x9", Ink and Watercolor, $400

Framed Ink and Watercolor 12″ x 9″  $400

I hope everyone has had a fabulous Thanksgiving week.

We had so much fun this holiday. Our son brought home a  college friend from Santa Fe who partook of our typical thanksgiving meal which consists of fish and some type of mollusk. This years it was clams and cod topped off by 3 different pies~pumpkin, lemon meringue and apple.

I am so excited to announce that I have officially started a Facebook page and would love if you hop and over and give it a like. The link is here and if you just click on it, you will be taken to the page where I hope you give it a great big LIKE!

On a super happy note, I have 7 paintings going to new homes this week. 3 paintings have gone to Boston area collectors  and one to someone in Asheville, NC.  I will be shipping 3 paintings to Montreal once I can package them all! That makes for quite a wonderful week for any artist! I feel very blessed.

I only wish that my mom could travel and were able to spend the holiday with us but she is approaching 88 and travel is not easy for her.

Here’s to December!

Let it bring us much cheer and opportunities to connect with family and friends.

And if you would like to learn about the ptarmigan you can click here. There are some fabulous photos online of the ptarmigan in Iceland and Alaska, but they are all copyrighted, thus I can’t show you the resemblance.

Plantation

WILL THEY?

Can you tell that all the animals are wondering if these two creatures will become a couple? They are also in a delicate tapestry of foliage with a gold background. You can tell it is gold paint by the way it reflects in the painting below.

I framed this in a cherry frame.

This weekend brought fun things. Friday I was out picking grapes with 2 fabulous artist friends, Teresa Mowery of Patina Studio-lovely copper work and Loren Quinn– fabulous custom mosaic and glass tiles.  You can check out their work via their links to their names. Teresa knew the owner, and the owner needed help with picking their 2 acres of vineyards. There were about 25 of us picking. We were served a fabulous lunch and all went home with a bottle of wine.

We attended 2 cool Halloween parties and I was planning to pick quince at Rocky Brook Orchard. I love to make quince jam and quince paste. But, it is just too cold today…it even snowed for a while and the wind was howling. Hopefully I will get there Wednesday.

On Sunday I gathered up my piece from the ” BIRDS OF A FEATHER” exhibit at Kathrine Lovell’s Gallery and Studio at Tiverton Four Corners. I will post it in an upcoming blog post. It is a departure from my usual work~so prepare to be surprised.

Plantation  is a 12″ by 9″ mixed media  framed in a cherry frame.

Plantation is also available  as Phone and I Pad covers from Keka cases .  I chose Plantation for my phone and I get so many compliments-very nice to hear.

To purchase contact me at susanmedyn(at)cox.net. I am always happy to work out a payment plan. Or click the link below.
