Frank and Alice

1 z Frank and Alice

I found the creature on the left very endearing. It reminded me of my father, Frank, who was a real character. I do miss him. He had so many health problems in the last 7 years of his life but never complained. Quite a wonderful dad. Of course the mercat bunny is Alice, my mom. She is  87 and going strong. I thought I would show my process as it isn’t always as simple as it looks.
1 blow dry

Here I am blow drying my drawing. My drawings go through several revisions before I decide that it is ready to be inked in. Using Aquabord involves wetting the surface prior to working on it. I find blow drying works best to remove the water without leaving any streaks.

I begin to ink in my work with a crow quill pen and indelible ink. Yes, exactly as though I were a school girl in the 1800’s.

1 light undertone

I am beginning to work the under color of the poppies. And I bet you thought I just applied paint directly as one color….although it may look that way, I often work with several layers of color so that there will be subtle highlights.

I am painting Frank. Brings back some nice memories.

1 working on

Putting more color into my painting. These creatures are bouncing on the poppy stem.

Finished!  Of course I will need to varnish this work. I use several very light coats of archival satin varnish.

This is a work I made to use as a repeating pattern. I like it just as it is.

But I hope to explore options in Photoshop if I can get through some tutorials!

You Were Made For Me! Day 13 of 30 in 30

You Were Made For Me

Do you remember the song “You Were Made for Me” by Freddie and The Dreamers.

I remember  the silly little movement 5′ 3″  tall Freddy Garrity would do as he sang.

He and the band kicked back their legs like they were skipping in place. Quite the signature movement added to their performance. If you don’t remember, you might get a kick out of watching this video.

These two know they were made for each other.

This is a 7″ x 5″ Ink and Watercolor on  Aqua Bord $150.

Day 11 0f 30 in 30, Flower Delivery

Flower Delivery

I didn’t have much time to paint the past few days as I have had a sinus infection.

With Amazon talking about drone delivery to one’s door, I thought it would be much nicer to get a delivery via a happy chick.

Greek Vase Figure

Screen Shot 2014-01-04 at 11.30.54 PMThis is a Greek vase figure in the Egyptian style. Downright frigid here in the northeast but to nearly as cold as the midwest where I hope everyone is able to stay warm. Talking to a friend in Abu Dabai this morning. It is evening there and they are having their first rain in several months and the temperature is a cool 68 @ 6PM.

Day 6 Red Ground Black Poppies

Red Ground, Black Poppies

Some of you may know that I am influenced by the pottery of Ancient Greece. I loved my trip there in my youth exploring temples in Athens, the islands, and the peloponnesus.

So here is my pun of black figure red ground, the earliest style of greek pottery from around the 7th century B.C. Initially developed in Corinth, but used by Greek and especially Athenian potters, this became the main style for decorating vases until the technique of red figure black ground was developed around 500 B.C.

I am very fond of the collection at the Metropolitan but would happily return to Greece again. The Fitzwilliam Museum has an excellent collection and resource explaining the technique. Their museum link will take you to their article on greek pottery.

Still trying to keep my theme of poppies going.

This is a little 3 1/2″ x 2 1.2″ Ink and watercolor. $25

High Heeled Chicken

High Heeled Chicken

A chicken always needs a good pair of high heels. Need I say more.

Sometimes it is hard to get a good photograph when using Arches cold press watercolor paper. The bumps on the paper cause the areas in-between to shadow to grey.

Sweet 7″ by 5″ Ink and Watercolor  already in a matte. $50.

Bond’s Bombardier

Bond's Bombideer copy

Do you remember the James Bond movie where the villain’s sexy girls shoot from their bras?

Well I have a little bombardier here. No danger intended, just one of my funny creatures.

30 in 30 coming up! Nose Ring and Happy 2014!

Nose Ring S Medyn © 2014

Happy New Year! I am participating in Leslie Byrd Saeta’s 30 in 30 but have set a goal to make small works in between making larger paintings for a group exhibit in Poland this Spring. Hop on over to Leslie’s page to see the works of  360 artists who are participating in this painting challenge.

My life has been quite busy. I thought I had the past week off but ended up working one day with clients in crisis and then spent a few days in upstate NY helping my mom out after a surgery. She is 87 and is doing great. The 7 hour  trip home though was through a pelting rainstorm. Luckily we were able to stop off at a good friend’s for a visit. This year brings many changes in my life and I am planning to relish them.
